Princeville Volunteer Gardeners Needed

The Kauai North Shore Lions Club and the Church of the Pacific are creating a new community vegetable garden to help provide fresh produce for the Church’s Food Pantry.  This Saturday, June 25th at 9am, members of the North Shore Lion’s Club and friends will be gathering with shovels, plants and strong hands to get the project started.  The local Weinberg Foundatino is awarding a $10,000 grant to the Food Pantry project upon successful completion of the project.  If you can lend a hand, just meet at the Church this Saturday morning at 9am.

The More Rain – The Bigger the Waterfalls!

We had a really great winter – with very little rain.  But this week Mother Nature seems to be making up for it!  Yesterday on Mother’s Day, we got nearly 6 inches of rain!  Today, it’s still raining, but not as hard… just 1 and a half inches from midnight to noon.  The road to Hanalei has been closed since yesterday for safety’s sake.  Unfortunately, the weather forecast is for more showers all week… all over the state of Hawaii.  But, as we said, the good news is that the waterfalls are magnificent as you can see.

This Just In! Kauai makes May-June Issue of VIA Magazine

Via Magazine May-June 2011 Cover

Via Magazine May-June 2011 Cover

Kauai’s North Shore is featured in a new article in the May-June issue of Via Magazine, published by the California State Automobile Association.  We would love to link you to the article, but for some reason it is not available on-line.  Frankly, we think that VIA Magazine alone is worth the cost of the year’s membership in AAA…. so if you are planning to join in the near future, be sure to check out this article, complete with beautiful photos.  Meanwhile, here are the highlights as the author, Jennifer Reese counts 11 ways she has fallen in love with Kauai’s North Shore.

#1 reason, of course, are the abundance of beautiful beaches.  Who could argue with that?

#2 reason to love Kauai’s North Shore – according to Jennifer – the chickens!  Now, there we draw the line.  We don’t love the chickens… and certainly not as they make their early morning wake-up rounds.  But, on the other hand, we have to admit that Kauai’s chickens are certainly the most beautiful chickens you will find anywhere.

#3 reason to love the North Shore – Hanalei Town.  We agree… love the restaurants, love the shops, love the beautiful mountains surrounding Hanalei and Hanalei Bay.

#4.  Hanalei’s historic green church – Wai’oli Hui’ia Church – is 177 years old.

#5 – Hanalei’s “Yellowfish Trading Company” a shop chocked full of Hawaiiana Antiques and collectibles.

#6 – Farmer’s Market in Hanalei… every Saturday morning at 9:30am.  Don’t be late!  Be sure to bring your own bags and lots of single $1 bills are greatly appreciated.

#7 – A kayak trip on the Hanalei River.  Great idea and now you can try a stand-up paddleboard on the river too.

#8 – Banana Joe’s in Kilauea where you will find great produce and cool off with a fruit frosty.  Our comment:  Be sure to take time to try Kilauea’s new “all natural” miniature golf course right next door to Banana Joe’s.

#9.  Kilauea Point Lighthouse.  We never get tired of visiting lighthouses – and from here you will get the best view on the island of Hawaii’s birdlife, whales and sometimes even spinner dolphins too!

#10 – Limahuli Garden – This is a member of the National Botanical Gardens and features Hawaii’s natural and endangered plants plus a wonderful demonstration garden of how ancient islanders grew Taro and other food.  The path leads you up a remote canyon and you will feel just like you have gone back in time a thousand years.

#11 – Taro makes Jennifer’s list of favorites.  The fields of Taro form the bright green patchwork quilt that you see looking out from the North Shore Vista Point in Princeville.  Jennifer gives a thumbs up to the Hanalei Taro & Joice Company’s “Kulolo” which is a sweet coconut-taro pudding.

We love reading about all of the ways that the little island of Kauai makes itself known around the world.  If you know of another article we have missed – be sure to let us know!  Just leave a “Reply” below!

Kauai – Read All About it! (In March Magazines that is)

It’s half way through April, but we’re just getting caught up with our March magazine reading… and everywhere we look… Kauai is there!

We just signed up to win a Guided Tour of the Moir Gardens on Kauai, including airfare and a week’s accommocations at the Kiahuna Plantation in Poipu.  We read all about this contest in the March issue of Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.  We hope we win!  And think of all the money they could save on the air fare!  The contest is still open on-line at:  www.BHG.com/hawaiisweeps

We are also avid Costco shoppers and look forward to their Costco Connection magazine every month.   The March issue featured “Weddings by Costco”… and on page 32 there is a wonderful story about a couple from Utah who booked their wedding trip to Kauai through Costco Travel and then went on to purchase all the fixings for their rehearsal dinner at Kauai’s Costco in Lihue.

Who would think that Kauai would get a mention in a magazine called “Southern Living”?  Their March issue featured an article about the up-and-coming music artists of Nashville.  One of their favorites, Courtney Jaye.  Says Southern Living… “You might call her tunes Patsy Cline meets Hawaiian lauau, since Courtney played beach bars in Kauai for a blissful stretch several years back.”

So, the moral of the story?  Once you have visited Kauai, it never really leaves you.  And it is fun to read all about Kauai in the colorful world of magazines.  A perfectly complimentary medium for the beautiful garden island of Kauai.
