Via Magazine May-June 2011 Cover
Kauai’s North Shore is featured in a new article in the May-June issue of Via Magazine, published by the California State Automobile Association. We would love to link you to the article, but for some reason it is not available on-line. Frankly, we think that VIA Magazine alone is worth the cost of the year’s membership in AAA…. so if you are planning to join in the near future, be sure to check out this article, complete with beautiful photos. Meanwhile, here are the highlights as the author, Jennifer Reese counts 11 ways she has fallen in love with Kauai’s North Shore.
#1 reason, of course, are the abundance of beautiful beaches. Who could argue with that?
#2 reason to love Kauai’s North Shore – according to Jennifer – the chickens! Now, there we draw the line. We don’t love the chickens… and certainly not as they make their early morning wake-up rounds. But, on the other hand, we have to admit that Kauai’s chickens are certainly the most beautiful chickens you will find anywhere.
#3 reason to love the North Shore – Hanalei Town. We agree… love the restaurants, love the shops, love the beautiful mountains surrounding Hanalei and Hanalei Bay.
#4. Hanalei’s historic green church – Wai’oli Hui’ia Church – is 177 years old.
#5 – Hanalei’s “Yellowfish Trading Company” a shop chocked full of Hawaiiana Antiques and collectibles.
#6 – Farmer’s Market in Hanalei… every Saturday morning at 9:30am. Don’t be late! Be sure to bring your own bags and lots of single $1 bills are greatly appreciated.
#7 – A kayak trip on the Hanalei River. Great idea and now you can try a stand-up paddleboard on the river too.
#8 – Banana Joe’s in Kilauea where you will find great produce and cool off with a fruit frosty. Our comment: Be sure to take time to try Kilauea’s new “all natural” miniature golf course right next door to Banana Joe’s.
#9. Kilauea Point Lighthouse. We never get tired of visiting lighthouses – and from here you will get the best view on the island of Hawaii’s birdlife, whales and sometimes even spinner dolphins too!
#10 – Limahuli Garden – This is a member of the National Botanical Gardens and features Hawaii’s natural and endangered plants plus a wonderful demonstration garden of how ancient islanders grew Taro and other food. The path leads you up a remote canyon and you will feel just like you have gone back in time a thousand years.
#11 – Taro makes Jennifer’s list of favorites. The fields of Taro form the bright green patchwork quilt that you see looking out from the North Shore Vista Point in Princeville. Jennifer gives a thumbs up to the Hanalei Taro & Joice Company’s “Kulolo” which is a sweet coconut-taro pudding.
We love reading about all of the ways that the little island of Kauai makes itself known around the world. If you know of another article we have missed – be sure to let us know! Just leave a “Reply” below!
